A Welsh Infantry Pioneer from Swansea: Pte Jack Davies, 1/6th (Glamorgan) Battalion the Welsh Regiment and Labour Corps

Pte Jack Davies, 1/6 Welsh Regiment & Labour Corps

Details of holder's service and that of the regiment:

His service records do not appear to have survived and, in view of his transfer to the Labour Corps he appears on their medal roll (which does not, in my experience, generally record previous battalions served with.) However, reference to the appropriate piece of the 1/6th (Territorial Force) Battalion, Welsh Regiment medal roll indicates that 266327 Pte Arthur James Jones, and 263329 Cpl Brinley Richards both commenced their active service with the 1/6th (Glamorgan) battalion, the Welsh Regiment, as did 266323, 266324, 266335 and 337 albeit under different numbers in some cases. This strongly suggests that Pte Davies went into action with this battalion. This would have been shortly after it became a divisional Pioneer Battalion to 1st Division on 15 May 1916, having worked on lines of communication duties since disembarkation at Le Havre in October 1914, and shortly before the division participated in the Somme offensive of July 1915.
