A Birmingham resident (Icknield street), formerly a metal spinner, he was called up and reported for duty at Birmingham on 31st April 1916 with the rank of Sapper (denoting a skilled trade), posted in the Docks & Inland Waterways Department and was graded B.II. He embarked with the British Expeditionary Force in July 1917 (apparently being paid at a rate of 2 Shillings a day for that duty), immediately prior to which he was at the Richborough depot, and was discharged to the Z Reserve in April 1919.
A nice British WW1 Great War VICTORY MEDAL to 101109/248618 Driver William FORDE, Royal Field Artillery (RFA) transferred Royal Engineers.
A 19-year old groom from County Wicklow, he was attested in Dublin on 8 October 1915 into the Royal Regiment of Artillery, serving initially with the 27th and 21st (Reserve) Batteries. Presumably in light of his skilled status he was posted remarkably quickly, within 4 days of attestation. On 2 May 1916 he was posted to the BEF in France, and served with various units before being posted to a Royal Engineer Signallers Company as a Driver.
